Safari Driver Guide: This is a great entry-level position
for those who want to return to Alaska in future summers as a guide. Many of our
current guide staff started out as Safari Driver Guides and then moved into
guiding positions as they learned the appropriate skills and gained the required
experience. We prefer applicants who have some experience driving large
vehicles, and experience with group facilitation, customer service, and/or
natural history interpretation is helpful as well. Each summer, we conduct a
three-week long staff training session. Safari Driver Guides concentrate on
driving skills for a week, and then join the rest of the staff for the rest of
our comprehensive training sessions (continuing to focus on safe driving during
the remainder of training). This summer's training session for drivers begins on
May 6. By the end of training, Safari Driver Guides must hold a class "C" CDL
license with a passenger endorsement (requires the passing of written and
driving tests, being "checked-off" by AWA trainers, and passing a physical and
drug-screen). From $9.00/hour.
Shuttle Driver:Experience with
general maintenance tasks, driving with trailers, and/or driving airporter vans
or buses is preferred (an Alaska Class "C" CDL license is a plus).
Responsibilities include guest pick-up and drop-offs at area airports, rafting
and fishing shuttles, vehicle preventative maintenance, and camp maintenance
tasks. From $8.00/hour.
Essential Requirements for Driver Positions:
- State of Alaska class "C" Commercial Driver License with a passenger
endorsement (or equivalent), or the ability to obtain a class "C" license during
staff training.
- Experience driving large vehicles, such as 15 passenger vans or 16-20
passenger vehicles (or larger) preferred.
- Pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen and participate in a random
drug and alcohol screening program as required by the DOT.
